About Camp Barkeley

The Camp Barkeley Name:

Camp Barkeley was named by the War Department after David Bennes Barkley, a Texan who won the Congressional Medal of Honor in World War I. (The difference in spelling is generally attributed to a spelling error on a document). The son of a Mexican-American mother, Barkley was the first Hispanic to win the Medal of Honor.

Camp Barkeley was in operation from 1941 to 1945 southwest of Abilene. All that remains at the location of the camp is a name on a gate since the land reverted back to its original owners following the war.

For years, former buildings from Camp Barkeley were used in Abilene, such as the former Taste Delight Do-nuts building at South 7th and Butternut streets. (from the ARN, June 15, 2010)
